Choosing the Right Quran for Your Home
The Quran is the most sacred book in Islam — a source of guidance, comfort, and barakah (blessing) for every Muslim household. But with so many editions, sizes, translations, and formats available, choosing the right Quran can feel overwhelming. Whether you're buying for yourself, your children, or as a gift, this guide will help you make the right choice.
At Marhaban Islamic Store in Dandenong, Melbourne, we stock a carefully selected range of Qurans and Quran accessories to suit every need and budget.
1. Consider the Purpose
Before choosing a Quran, ask yourself: Who is it for, and how will it be used?
- For daily recitation (Tilawah): Choose a clear Arabic-text Quran in a comfortable size — not too small to strain the eyes, not too large to hold comfortably.
- For understanding and study: A Quran with an English translation or tafsir (commentary) is ideal, especially for those still learning Arabic or for new Muslims.
- For children: Look for larger print, colourful editions, or interactive formats that make learning engaging and fun.
- As a gift or display piece: A beautifully presented Quran in a decorative box or with a stand makes a stunning and meaningful gift for weddings, Eid, or new homes.
2. Arabic Only vs. Translation
For Muslims who read Arabic fluently, a pure Arabic Quran is the traditional choice. However, for those who want to deepen their understanding, a Quran with a side-by-side English translation is invaluable. It allows you to follow the meaning of each ayah as you recite, strengthening both your connection to the words and your comprehension of the message.
Our The Meaning of the Quran is a wonderful resource for English-speaking Muslims looking to connect more deeply with the words of Allah.
3. Size and Format
Qurans come in a range of sizes:
- Pocket size: Ideal for travel, keeping in your bag, or reading on the go.
- Standard size: The most common choice for home use — easy to hold and read.
- Large/Juz format: Great for elderly readers or those with vision difficulties, as the larger print reduces eye strain.
4. Display Your Quran with Respect
In Islamic tradition, the Quran should always be stored and displayed with the utmost respect — kept in a clean, elevated place, never placed on the floor, and ideally stored in a protective box or cover when not in use.
Our beautiful Quran Boxes with Stand are the perfect solution for displaying your Quran with dignity in your home:
- Quran Box with Stand (Metal) — Size 14x20cm — ideal for standard-sized Qurans.
- Quran Box with Stand (Metal) — Size 17x25cm — perfect for larger Qurans or display editions.
These elegant metal boxes keep your Quran protected and beautifully presented on your bookshelf or prayer table.
5. A Unique Gift Idea: The Quran Touch Lamp
Looking for something truly special? Our Quran Touch Lamp is a stunning piece that combines the beauty of Quranic calligraphy with soft, ambient lighting. It makes a wonderful gift for weddings, new homes, Eid, or any special Islamic occasion — a constant reminder of Allah's words in every room.
6. Quran Books for Children
Instilling a love of the Quran in children from a young age is one of the greatest gifts a parent can give. Our Stories of the Quran Quiz Book by Ammar Awais is a fun, engaging way to introduce children to the stories and lessons of the Quran through an interactive quiz format — perfect for kids aged 6 and above.
Tips for Caring for Your Quran
Once you've chosen your Quran, here are a few simple tips to care for it properly:
- Always handle the Quran with clean hands and in a state of wudu (ablution).
- Store it in an elevated, clean place — never on the floor.
- Use a Quran box or cloth cover to protect it from dust and damage.
- Avoid placing other books or objects on top of the Quran.
- If a Quran becomes too worn to use, it should be wrapped in a clean cloth and buried respectfully, or given to a mosque.
